What will it take to STOP losing our loved ones to cancer?
Adult stem cells, already found throughout your body, could be the new "secret weapon" to destroying cancerous tumors. Years ago, they became the foundation for bone marrow replacement or transplant, and thus hundreds of thousands of people with various cancers and blood diseases have been cured. Yet this approach isn't enough for everyone.
Adult stem cells repair diseased or injured tissue, and are called into action by their natural attraction to areas of inflammation. Because cancerous tumors are often highly inflammatory, these tumors act as a homing ground for adult stem cells. Thus, scientists can use stem cells as delivery vehicles to target drugs directly into a cancer patient’s tumor. Using adult stem cells in this way, like “Trojan Horses,” could dramatically increase the effectiveness and decrease the toxicity of anti-cancer drugs and genes.
Experimental studies in animal models already show promising results. Adult stem cells carrying cancer-killing gene therapy vectors have been able to hunt down cancerous tumors in mice and successfully eradicate the disease.
IT WILL TAKE $600,000 to conduct the first FDA approved human trial using adult stem cells as drug delivery vehicles in cancer patients.
